My Research Philosophy

Research Philosophy of Dr. Mercy Chukwuedo

My research is driven by a passion to bridge the gap between ancient biblical texts and contemporary African realities. I approach research as both a scholarly and missional endeavor—one that seeks to uncover the depth of Scripture while addressing the existential questions facing the African church and society.

At the heart of my research is the New Testament, particularly the Pauline epistles, where themes such as reconciliation, justice, gender, suffering, and eschatology intersect with pressing global concerns. I employ a blend of historical-critical analysis, literary criticism, and African hermeneutics to explore these texts. This multi-dimensional approach enables me to produce scholarship that is both academically rigorous and contextually relevant.

A core strand of my research focuses on the role of women in Scripture and ministry. Through publications and conference presentations, I challenge patriarchal interpretations of the New Testament and advocate for inclusive readings that affirm the agency of women in church and society.

I also explore comparative themes between Christianity and African Traditional Religion, especially in areas such as eschatology, death, and immortality. By bringing these two traditions into conversation, I aim to enrich theological reflection and foster interreligious understanding.

My research is collaborative and translational—I actively contribute to edited volumes, international conferences, and postdoctoral fellowships in the global theological community. As a teacher-researcher, I believe that knowledge must serve the church, inform public discourse, and shape policy for the common good.
